Nature – Field
With field methods, researchers try to locate compliments within a suitable corpus. They can only do that if they already know what a compliment is. Thus a field approach presumes a precise definition of a compliment, and it cannot be expected to yield a more precise definition or further insights into the nature of compliments as a result.
